G506 Cargo Truck — American 1½-Ton 4×4 Military Truck Family
The G506 Cargo Truck was a family of American 1½-ton, 4×4 military trucks developed for the U.S. Army and produced by Chevrolet, a division of General Motors, during the Second World War. Entering production in 1940, the G506 family included numerous configurations designed to meet different military transportation and support requirements, from standard cargo trucks to vehicles equipped with winches, recovery equipment, radio bodies, workshops, and other specialized installations.
Built around a robust 4×4 chassis, the G506 trucks combined a Chevrolet six-cylinder gasoline engine with a four-speed manual transmission and two-speed transfer case. Their conventional layout, solid axles, and leaf-spring suspension provided the durability and off-road capability required for military service, while the standardized chassis allowed the same basic platform to be adapted to a wide variety of bodies and equipment.
The G506 family included several well-known configurations, such as the G7107 and G7117 cargo trucks, the G7105 panel delivery truck, and numerous specialized variants based on the same 1½-ton 4×4 platform. Some were fitted with winches and recovery equipment, while others served as tow trucks, radio trucks, maintenance shops, repair vehicles, and other support vehicles. This versatility made the G506 one of the important light truck families used throughout the Allied war effort.
More than 160,000 G506 Cargo Truck series trucks were produced during the Second World War, with large numbers supplied to the U.S. military and Allied nations through the Lend-Lease program. Thousands were delivered to the Soviet Union, where these trucks served in demanding front-line and logistical roles alongside other American-supplied vehicles.
With its distinctive 1½-ton 4×4 chassis, numerous body configurations, and extensive wartime service, the G506 Cargo Truck family represents an important chapter in American military vehicle production.
